Tenses Errors Asked in CAT, XAT, IBPS, SBI, SSC & RBI Exams

Master the most frequently tested Tense Error patterns appearing in Error Detection, Sentence Improvement, Fillers, Grammar and Verbal Ability sections.

1. Present Indefinite vs Present Continuous

Rule: Use Present Indefinite for habits, routines and universal truths.

✗ She is going to school every day.

✓ She goes to school every day.

✗ Water is boiling at 100°C.

✓ Water boils at 100°C.

Exam Trap: Adverbs such as every day, always, usually, often generally indicate Present Indefinite.

2. Stative Verbs Not Used in Continuous Tense

Rule: Verbs such as know, believe, understand, love, hate, prefer, remember and own are generally not used in continuous form.

✗ I am knowing the answer.

✓ I know the answer.

✗ She is believing your story.

✓ She believes your story.

3. Present Perfect with Finished Past Time

Rule: Present Perfect cannot normally be used with yesterday, last week, last year etc.

✗ I have seen him yesterday.

✓ I saw him yesterday.

✗ She has joined the company last year.

✓ She joined the company last year.

Words like yesterday, ago, last week, last month, last year require Simple Past.

4. Present Perfect for Unfinished Time

Rule: Use Present Perfect or Present Perfect Continuous for actions continuing up to the present.

✗ I am living here since 2018.

✓ I have been living here since 2018.

✗ He works here for ten years.

✓ He has worked here for ten years.

5. Since vs For

Rule: Since = point of time; For = duration.

✗ He has been here since five years.

✓ He has been here for five years.

✗ She has lived here for 2015.

✓ She has lived here since 2015.

6. Future After When, If, Until, Before

Rule: Future tense is not normally used in subordinate clauses.

✗ I will call you when I will reach home.

✓ I will call you when I reach home.

✗ If it will rain, we will stay indoors.

✓ If it rains, we will stay indoors.

7. Sequence of Tenses

Rule: When the reporting verb is in the past tense, the subordinate clause generally shifts to a past form.

✗ He said that he is busy.

✓ He said that he was busy.

✗ She told me that she has completed the work.

✓ She told me that she had completed the work.

8. Universal Truth Exception

Rule: Universal truths remain in Present Indefinite even in reported speech.

✗ The teacher said that the Earth revolved around the Sun.

✓ The teacher said that the Earth revolves around the Sun.

9. Past Perfect Misuse

Rule: Past Perfect is used only when two past actions are involved.

✗ I had seen him yesterday.

✓ I saw him yesterday.

✓ I had finished my work before he arrived.

10. Future Perfect

Rule: Use Future Perfect for actions completed before a future point.

✗ By next year I complete the course.

✓ By next year I will have completed the course.

11. Continuous Tense with Always

Rule: Present Continuous with always often expresses irritation.

✓ He is always complaining.

✓ She is always interrupting others.

12. Present Perfect vs Simple Past

Rule: Use Present Perfect for life experiences.

✗ Did you ever visit London?

✓ Have you ever visited London?

13. Had Better

Rule: Use the base form after had better.

✗ You had better to leave now.

✓ You had better leave now.

14. Used To

Rule: Used to is followed by the base verb.

✗ He used to playing cricket.

✓ He used to play cricket.

15. Would Rather

Rule: Would rather is followed by the base verb.

✗ I would rather to stay home.

✓ I would rather stay home.
