Master the most important Verb Form and Conditional Error patterns repeatedly asked in Banking, SSC, MBA Entrance and Placement Tests.

1. Verb After Modal Verbs

Rule: After can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, use the base form (V1).

✗ He can sings well.

✓ He can sing well.

✗ She must goes now.

✓ She must go now.

Exam Trap: Modal + V1 only.

2. Modal Perfect Structure

Rule: Modal + Have + V3

✗ He should had informed us.

✓ He should have informed us.

✗ They could went earlier.

✓ They could have gone earlier.

3. Infinitive Errors

Rule: To + Base Verb

✗ I want going home.

✓ I want to go home.

✗ He decided joining the company.

✓ He decided to join the company.

4. Gerund After Preposition

Rule: Any preposition must be followed by Verb + ing.

✗ She is interested in learn French.

✓ She is interested in learning French.

✗ He left without inform me.

✓ He left without informing me.

Prepositions include: in, on, at, by, without, after, before, for, from, of.

5. Gerund After Certain Verbs

Rule: Enjoy, avoid, admit, deny, finish, suggest are followed by gerunds.

✗ I enjoy to read.

✓ I enjoy reading.

✗ She suggested to wait.

✓ She suggested waiting.

6. Infinitive After Certain Verbs

Rule: Decide, agree, hope, plan, want are followed by infinitives.

✗ She agreed helping me.

✓ She agreed to help me.

✗ He hopes getting selected.

✓ He hopes to get selected.

7. Parallel Verb Forms

Rule: Maintain the same grammatical structure throughout a series.

✗ He likes reading, swimming and to dance.

✓ He likes reading, swimming and dancing.

✓ He likes to read, to swim and to dance.

8. Participial Errors

Rule: Participles must logically modify the intended noun.

✗ Being a rainy day, the match was cancelled.

✓ As it was a rainy day, the match was cancelled.

9. Dangling Participles

Rule: The participial phrase must clearly refer to the subject.

✗ Walking down the road, the trees looked beautiful.

✓ Walking down the road, I found the trees beautiful.

One of the most common CAT and GMAT error patterns.

10. Having + V3

Rule: Use Having + Past Participle for a completed action before another action.

✗ Having finish the work, he left.

✓ Having finished the work, he left.

11. Make + Object + Verb

Rule: Make is followed by the base form without “to”.

✗ He made me to cry.

✓ He made me cry.

12. Let + Object + Verb

Rule: Let is followed by V1.

✗ Let him to go.

✓ Let him go.

13. Have + Object + Verb

Rule: Causative Have uses the base form.

✗ I had him to clean the room.

✓ I had him clean the room.

14. Help + Verb

Rule: Both forms are accepted.

✓ Help me do it.

✓ Help me to do it.

15. Verbs of Perception

Rule: After see, hear, watch, notice, observe use the bare infinitive or present participle.

✗ I saw him to cross the road.

✓ I saw him cross the road.

✓ I saw him crossing the road.

16. Rather Than Construction

Rule: Maintain parallel structure after rather than.

✗ He prefers reading rather than to write.

✓ He prefers reading rather than writing.

17. Than Construction

Rule: Use the base verb after than.

✗ She would rather die than to beg.

✓ She would rather die than beg.

18. First Conditional

Rule: If + Present Simple, Future Simple.

✗ If you will study, you will pass.

✓ If you study, you will pass.

✗ If it will rain, we will stay inside.

✓ If it rains, we will stay inside.

19. Second & Third Conditional + Wish Structures

Rule: Use were for unreal present situations and had + V3 for unreal past situations.

✗ If I was rich, I would travel.

✓ If I were rich, I would travel.

✗ If he would have worked hard, he would have succeeded.

✓ If he had worked hard, he would have succeeded.

✗ I wish I am rich.

✓ I wish I were rich.

✗ I wish I didn’t attend that meeting.
